Growing up, Lucas had a passion for cars and motor racing, which would eventually serve as inspiration for his films 1-30-98 (1997) and Radioland Murders (1994). He also developed an interest in filmmaking at an early age; he made his first film when he was just 18 years old with his friend John Plummer.
After graduating from high school in 1962, Lucas enrolled at Modesto Junior College before transferring to the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles on a scholarship.
