The ICC Cricket World Cup is the international championship of men’s One Day International (ODI) cricket. The event is organised by the sport’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), with preliminary qualification rounds leading up to a finals tournament which has been held every four years since 1975. The World Cup comprises matches between twelve teams, nine of which are Full Members (top-ranked Test nations) and three of which come from the Associate Member category. No other teams beyond this make an appearance at global ODI tournaments.

Australia has won the 50 over World Cup six times, including the first two competitions and most recently in 2015. The team has been dominant in this format for decades, winning three out of four tournaments since its inception in 1975.

Australia’s dominance began with a clean sweep of all matches at home during their first appearance at Lord’s in 1975. They then went on to beat West Indies by seven wickets in 1979 to claim their second title before defeating England by eight wickets at Brisbane Cricket Ground four years later. Australia also reached finals day on three other occasions but lost to New Zealand (1992), South Africa (1999) and India (2011).

Pakistan (3)

Pakistan have won three 50-over World Cup tournaments. They won their first title in 1992 under Wasim Akram, and then their second in 1999 under him as well. The third time was when Waqar Younis took over as captain for 2003, but he couldn’t lead his team to victory because his bowling attack was not strong enough to get past Australia’s batting lineup which included Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh (both Australians).

West Indies (2)

• West Indies are the only team to have won two World Cups, in 1975 and 1979.
• They were also the first team to win a World Cup on their own soil, beating Australia in Bridgetown, Barbados in 1975.
• The West Indies’ total of six titles is more than any other country has achieved; India have five wins while Australia and India have four each.

Sri Lanka (1)

• Sri Lanka’s only victory came in 1996, when they beat Australia by 8 wickets.
• Muttiah Muralitharan took 7 wickets and Sanath Jayasuriya scored the fastest ODI century (in just 54 balls).

New Zealand (1)

New Zealand won the 1992 Cricket World Cup, beating Pakistan in the final. The Kiwis were captained by Martin Crowe and their opening batsman was Andrew Jones. They beat Australia in their semi-final to reach the final where they faced Pakistan at Eden Park, Auckland on 28 February 1992. The match was played over 50 overs per side and New Zealand were dismissed for 213 with Grant Elliott making 76 off 92 balls including nine fours before getting out to Waqar Younis who took 5/50 from his 10 overs (1/34). In reply Pakistan were all out for 205 with Tony Smith taking 3/42 off 10 overs as well as scoring 18 runs off 21 balls as a pinch hitter at number four during an injury crisis that saw both openers dropped from their original positions due to injuries sustained during earlier games in this tournament; Imran Khan top scored for Pakistan with 57 off 72 balls while Shahid Afridi made 38 not out from just 17 deliveries including three sixes but these efforts weren’t enough – New Zealand won by eight wickets!

South Africa (1)

South Africa won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1992. Their captain was Clive Rice, and they played in a group with Australia and West Indies. They beat Australia in their semi-final match, then went on to beat West Indies by 7 wickets in the final at Melbourne’s Wankhede Stadium on April 25th 1992.

At the end of the day, as far as 50 over cricket is concerned, Australia has been the most successful team in World Cups. They have won 6 out of 10 tournaments and have appeared in every final since 1992 when this format started being played. They are followed by India and Pakistan who have won 3 each while West Indies has 2 titles under their belt. On an interesting note, Sri Lanka was never able to win one despite reaching 4 finals but New Zealand did manage to lift up the trophy once back in 1992 thanks to Martin Crowe’s men who were undefeated throughout this tournament!
