    The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during the months of April and May of every year by eight teams representing eight different cities in India. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. The first season of the IPL was held in 2009 and featured eight teams from Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad and Chandigarh. The inaugural match was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 18 April 2009.

    The first IPL match was played on April 18, 2008, at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The inaugural match was between the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Chennai Super Kings won the match by 10 wickets.
