Cerritos is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, and is one of the Gateway Cities. The population was 48,521 at the 2010 census, up from 46,837 at the 2000 census. It is located between Los Angeles and Orange counties; it is more than halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego on Interstate 5.

Cerritos was incorporated as a general law city on November 10, 1956 (and reincorporated on May 29th 1958). However, it existed as an unincorporated area since 1850 when Don Jose Maria Verdugo began to colonize Rancho La Cienega o Paso de la Tijera – land that would eventually become Cerritos – with Spanish settlers from Sonora Mexico before selling his holdings to two American farmers named Edward Beale & William Workman who established cattle ranches there until 1852 when they sold out to John Wetherby who started building railroads through Southern California during this time period leading up towards San Francisco while also trying his hand at farming; unfortunately he too failed miserably due to drought conditions so much so that even today there remains no evidence whatsoever left behind by any of these early pioneers except for some faint traces here & there which only locals know about!
